Hero-to-Hero Project While any Modesto Firefighter would hesitate to assume the title of 'hero', the department is pleased and honored to participate in a show of support to the soldiers representing our country in Iraq through the Hero-to-Hero project. The Hero-to-Hero program (www.patrioticpastime.com) is a Lakewood, WA based organization, with a desire to send a small piece of hometown U.S.A. to our troops. The 2nd year project enables stateside 'heroes' to show their support for our troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan by literally giving them the shirt off their backs. Mr. Jerry Grinstead, grandfather of a soldier in the 73rd Combat Engineers, is coordinating the T-shirt collection effort from California Fire Departments. The 73rd Army Combat Engineers are stationed at the Field Operations Base in Mosul, Iraq. The hope is that the members of the 73rd Combat Engineers will be able to trade t-shirts amongst themselves until they can get one from a fire department that is close to home.
